Following on from the popularity of Astraware Word Games on other platforms, we're pleased to bring Astraware Word Games to iOS and Mac OS X!
Astraware Word Games is a pack of 5 word games (Shuffle, Wordsearh, Hexxed, Gridlock, and Spellmaster) which comprises anagram games, word searches, grid puzzles and spelling challenges. TouchPad users following the progress on our TouchPad Totalizer will be pleased to know that OddBlob is now available for this device. OddBlob is a simple but addictive arcade game which has been created entirely from modelling clay. This is our 5th game for the HP Touchpad since we released Astraware Mahjong in December and completes the releases we offered on our Touchpad Totalizer back in December. Since the response to the Touchpad Totalizer has been good, we have decided to offer an extra game for when we reach 7500 units sold for this device. The game is Astraware Word Games, currently only available for the Barnes and Noble Nook Color and Tablet and Amazon's Kindle Fire.
18th April 2012: Astraware Mahjong for iOS gets update; adds graphics for Retina display on new iPad
If you picked up a new iPad, you will be happy to know that our premium mahjong solitaire game, Astraware Mahjong, has been updated with better and shinier in-game graphics to make use of the the new stunning Retina display used on the new iPad.
Astraware Mahjong is a full-featured Mahjong Solitaire game that includes optional Auto-Zoom, the Mahjong of the Day daily challenge where you can compare your time with those from other players world-wide, and truly solvable puzzles at Easy, Medium and Hard difficulty levels, as well as a Classic mode with traditional Mahjong puzzles where a straightforward solution is not guaranteed.
I think you will all agree that the new graphics look sharp!
We are happy to let you know that our first game for HP Touchpad is here and it is our popular Astraware Mahjong. We'd like to add more games for the Touchpad - some of you are already asking for Astraware Sudoku, Tradewinds 2, Astraware Casino etc.
We need to sell enough copies of Astraware Mahjong to cover the development cost for that and for other apps. This is where you can help us. Visit our Touchpad Totalizer page, see what games are coming next, and help us spread the word amongst the awesome webOS community so we can bring these other games to you. We're almost a quarter of the way towards the next title already, but we can't do it without your help!
The world of mobile applications and devices is a fast moving place. Devices and operating systems are updated often, and their popularity changes over time. Eventually the time comes when some of them need to ride off into the sunset. With this in mind, we have taken the decision to discontinue sales of games for Palm OS, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, and Symbian S60 from our website.
Palm OS, and Windows Mobile have both been retired by their respective creators and so a couple of years down the line, we feel the time is right for us to do the same. You can however still get our webOS games for the Palm Pre.
For BlackBerry and Symbian S60, while we kept up for some time with new devices and OS versions, we found that there wasn't enough demand for our titles on these platforms to keep up the pace of development for each new device and OS version. As our games began to support only a minority of devices available, we took the decision again that it's better to retire the products and focus on making the best games we can for platforms which are popular now, and we believe have the brightest future.
We will provide support for purchases for these platforms for a limited period of time, but if you have bought these games and may need to reset your device or re-download the games, we'd recommend doing that now and keeping the files (and codes where relevant) backed up in a safe place. If you have any questions, please direct these to our Support Team: here.
If you're the proud owner of a NOOK Color and have installed the most recent NOOK software update (first released 25th April), you may have noticed that you now have an App store on your ebook reader. We're very excited to say that we have joined Barnes & Noble's app developer program and optimized a selection of our games for the NOOK Color.
Our award-winning Sudoku - Astraware Sudoku, our best-selling casino games pack - Astraware Casino, our 12 games in 1 solitaire pack - Astraware Solitaire, and our highly acclaimed Mahjong solitaire game - Astraware Mahjong were all released last month and have gained excellent reviews from customers.
This month, we've added two more great games to the NOOK Apps catalog. We had lots of requests for our classic games pack Astraware Board Games, so that's available right now, and if you enjoy a great strategy game with some pirate battles, and trading in exotic goods, then why not set sail for a Caribbean adventure and play Tradewinds 2! All these games are available in the NOOK Apps store today!
If you love Sudoku puzzles, you can get 6 new puzzles free every day with our new Sudoku Of The Day app for iPhone/iPod touch, iPad, and for Android phones and tablets.

We're excited to publish a new platform game for iPhone and iPod touch! Entitled Captain CupCake and the Donut Disaster, the game was developed by a student who did a year's work placement with us at Astraware. He developed the game in his spare time after returning to university for his third year.
The Veggie Villains have struck again! All bakeries across the Isla Cocoa are reporting their Donut supplies missing. There's only one man for the job - call Captain CupCake! Captain CupCake and the Donut Disaster is a FREE platform game with dozens of levels across 2 zones. Players who manage to master the free levels can also purchase additional level packs in-game. Captain CupCake and the Donut Disaster includes Game Center achievements and a leaderboard for high scores.
If you have a Mac and are running Mac OS X Snow Leopard you can now get 4 Astraware games to play on your Mac. Each of the game is available from the Mac App Store which is an app you install on your Mac, like iTunes.
Astraware Mahjong, OddBlob, Astraware Sudoku, and Astraware Solitaire are all available now and optimized for larger screens and mouse or touchpad controls. More games for Mac are currently in development and are expected later this year.
Releasing Astraware Mahjong for iPhone and iPad marks a wonderful warm glowy point for us - Mahjong was the first real game that Astraware developed after moving from a partnership (a hobby with benefits) to a company (same again, with extra bonus paperwork!).
We worked really hard on the game for Palm OS, despite what (compared to now) would be a very constrained platform, and came out with a great playable game that amazingly continued to sell for as long as Palm OS was alive - and then even longer! It never got the exposure or hit status of many of our other games, but the thing was, people kept on buying it and playing it!
Some of the early design features, such as making sure the game was fun, the tiles were really visible, and that the puzzles generated were all actually solvable, are all principles we kept when designing the new version. This last one was a real headscratcher, and I remember it requiring a whole lot of really strong coffee to help solve that!
The new version has been a long time coming - we've had it planned for at least 5 years as a game to come back and create for new platforms, and this one has been in development (on and off) for nearly a year, during which we've done a whole lot of work to get a really nice game that uses 3D technology in a good way. We've also added some features we're really proud of, like achievements and a golden tile deck to earn and play with (an idea borrowed from Astraware Solitaire) and also the competitive 'Mahjong Of The Day' feature - cheerfully inherited from Astraware Sudoku's daily puzzles and high score tables.
We're busily working to bring Astraware Mahjong to other platforms as soon as possible, including a very new giant leap for Astraware, which is making desktop Mac and PC versions! Who knows where that will lead us!
Of course the complete full circle would be to come back and revisit the first game that launched Astraware - Zap!2000. But that would be teasing, wouldn't it!
Following on from the popularity of some of our classic games packs on webOS™, we're pleased to partner with Sandlot Games to bring their popular adventure trading game, Tradewinds 2 to Palm® Pre and Pre Plus smartphones.
Select a character to play and then explore the Caribbean, visiting different ports, buying and selling exotic goods to build a fortune, whilst completing missions and tasks for the local Governors, and defeating pirates to plunder their vast hordes of booty! Tradewinds 2 includes a choice of play modes - Story Mode which includes missions and tasks, and Free Trade mode where the aim is to build the biggest fortune. Set sail for your adventure now - Tradewinds 2 exclusively from the Palm App Catalog!
If you're registered with Apple's Game Center on your iPhone or iPod touch, you're probably looking for more games to play with fun achievements and leaderboards, so you can compete with your friends. We're pleased to say that we're adding Game Center to some of our iOS games and the first one to be released is Bubble Babble.
Link together letter bubbles to make words. Score points for each word you make and challenge your word power to make bigger and better words as the letter bubbles float to the surface. Earn Game Center achievements and take your place on the Bubble Babble online leaderboards as you master 4 fun play modes! Bubble Babble is available now from the App Store - grab your copy now and get your name on the leaderboards!
As you'll see from the banner on our site, we've become a GelaSkins affiliate. What that means is when you buy GelaSkins for your phone/gaming device/ebook reader via our website, we get a small percentage of the sale.
We decided to work with GelaSkins as we were impressed with their cool artwork and with the range of different gadgets and phones they have skins for. As well as a huge choice of designs from their artists, you can also upload your own designs or photographs and make a skin that's really exclusive. Mike, our artist decided to make a design using the clay graphics from OddBlob, and as you'll see from the photo, it really makes a great design for his iPhone 4, even carrying through to the rainbow background for his home screen!
We're pleased to confirm that our classic board games collection Astraware Board Games is now available for Palm® Pre™ and Pre Plus. It brings together 8 popular board games designed with casual players and non-experts in mind and includes Chess, Backgammon, Ludo, Checkers, Reversi, Nine Men's Morris, Snakes and Ladders, and Tic Tac Toe. It also includes a fun feature that allows you to shake your phone to roll the dice!
The more observant amongst you will have noticed a new tab has appeared at the top of the site. Yes! We're now supporting Palm's newest platform, webOS™, which is the operating system on their Pre™ and Pre Plus smartphones. We're hoping to add to support for the Pixi™ and Pixi Plus as well as other future webOS devices as they appear.
The first 4 games we've released for Palm® Pre/Pre Plus are Astraware Casino, OddBlob, Police Range, and Astraware Sudoku. All these games have been created using Palm's PDK . In order to run the games on your phone, you'll need the most recent 1.4.5 OS update, which has been rolled out by carriers across the US and Europe recently. We'll have more of our own games coming soon, and hope to release games from some of our licensor partners too! Check back here regularly to see which titles are released next!
You might be wondering what the little Gelaskins banner is that you can see on the front of the website, and we're pleased to let you know that we've become a Gelaskins affiliate. What does that mean? Simply put, it means that we like the skins that they produce for a range of smartphones and other devices like e-readers, iPads, games consoles and laptops.
If you also like the beautiful, artistic skins they produce, or if you want to create one from your own photographs or artwork, then please click through to their site from ours. Each time you do that and order something, we get a small percentage of the sale price, which all goes towards us making more games!
If you're a fan of classic action arcade games then Brad Mitchum: Lost In Time is perfect for you! Inspired by classic ball-shooting games like Pang or Buster Bros, Brad Mitchum tells the story of an archaeologist who searches for ancient mysterious objects. He finds a legendary talisman but realises all the gems are missing from it. At that moment a bright light appears and he's attacked by metallic balls. Brad Mitchum is lost in time, and he doesn't see the funny side!
The game is available for Windows Mobile/WIndows Phone 5 and 6 devices with touchscreens, and includes 3 high-action play modes: Story, Pure, and X-Trem, each with different styles, and challenges. If you like the game, you can also become Brad's friend on Facebook!
It's been absolutely ages since we released anything new for Windows Phone (formerly Windows Mobile) users, and now 2 games come along at once!
First up is Police Range - our take on the classic shooting range game. Put your skill and accuracy to the test as you choose from 2 ranges to train on; Target Practice where speed and accuracy are key, and Crime Alley where you test your nerve as you aim to shoot the bad guys and avoid the civilians as the targets pop up in windows and doorways!
Next up is OddBlob - a fun puzzle arcade game made entirely from modelling clay. Guide OddBlob across the squishy maze to grab bonuses, chomp fruit, and win points as quickly as he can as the chasing tiles disappear behind. Bounce and double bounce tiles can help him reach his goal or throw him to his doom below!
Both games for Windows Phone include Astraware's new online high score tables so you can see how you compare to other players worldwide. Both games are also available for iPhone and iPod touch and use OpenFeint for online high scores!
Having been lucky enough to witness the announcement of iPhone 4 in person at this year's Apple Worldwide Developer Conference, I was keen to get my hands on one as soon as possible after release. This morning, at an hour much earlier than I usually awake, I dragged myself out of bed and got ready to head down to our local O2 store. O2 had opted not to offer any kind of pre-order, but had specified that they would only sell the iPhone to existing O2 subscribers. As I was out of contract with them, I decided to queue up nice and early and take my chances.
I arrived at the O2 store just after 6.00 am to find myself 9th in the queue. There was some debate about how many iPhones the store would have in stock and we chatted generally until the store manager arrived and started to take information from people in the queue. Just before the opening time of 8.02 am, the manager got to me, took my details and gave me a voucher for the phone. I was in! Now I just had to fill out some paperwork and before long I was walking out with a lovely new boxed 32GB iPhone4!
I headed back to the office and with keen onlookers opened the box to reveal the new iPhone. I unpacked it to reveal the earbuds, USB sync cable, and a very neat little wall plug for charging your phone. Inside the documentation pack there was a tiny tool for opening the SIM card tray, and I put this to good work, removing the SIM from my old iPhone, extracting the micro SIM section and inserting it into the iPhone 4. Once that was done it was time to plug the phone into iTunes to activate it. The activation took a matter of seconds and soon I was looking at the shiny new default home screen complete with background wallpaper - a new feature that was added in iOS4!
The first thing that strikes you is just how incredibly clear the screen is. The type is beautifully defined, and the default wallpaper really shows off the screen well. There's also a new 'glassy' dock at the bottom where you can keep your 4 favourite/most-used apps! Once I was done admiring the screen, it was time to sync my phone with the backup from my old iPhone. It took a while to optimize all my photos for iPhone 4, add several GB of music and install updated versions of some applications I'd downloaded, and whilst it was copying everything across I took a photo close up of the syncing screen so you could see how smooth the fonts are.
Even at close range the micro mode on my camera didn't show the screen as pixellated. The type is very easy to read and the claim that your eye cannot discern the pixels at 300+ pixels per inch certainly rings true here! Once syncing was complete I launched iBooks and opened up Winnie The Pooh (a childhood favourite). The quality of the typeface and the original illustration is amazing - very sharp, easy on the eye, and reminiscent of a real book. Even very small type is clear and crisp. I also ran a small test outdoors and the screen is also easy to read in bright sunlight (unusually we actually have bright sunlight in the UK today, so I could test it!)
As a final test of my new phone I decided to check out a few applications on iPhone 4. I'd had an update from Twitter yesterday to say it was updated, so I launched the app and sure enough the graphics and typeface were all very high quality. I tried double-clicking iPhone 4's Home button and it popped up the multitasking bar at the bottom of the screen, so I was able to switch to another app and then go back to Twitter finding it in exactly the same place I'd left it! We're in the process of adding this functionality to as many of our games as possible, so look out for updates soon!
We haven't updated any of the graphics in our games to optimize them for iPhone 4's 640x960 resolution Retina screen, but in the meantime, the phone will automatically resize the existing graphics using Apple's pixel-doubling technology. I must say that even without optimization, OddBlob looks really amazing. Can't wait to see what the updated graphics look like! If you've got your hands on a shiny new iPhone 4, why not visit our Facebook page and give us your impressions and feedback!
Howard recently took delivery of an iPad here are a few hints and tips he's found in the first week of use:
iBooks is great - but you're not just limited to books from the Apple store - ePub format works fine, and there are plenty of places to find free eBooks (Project Gutenberg being the #1 stop!). Set the font size to the size most comfortable to you and read away.
There's a setting (hidden away in the Settings app) that allows you to change the behaviour of a single tap on the left side of the screen, so you can make that also advance a page. Might not sound like much of a change but if you're reading in bed it gives you the choice of which hand to advance the pages with, and with minimal effort :D (You can still 'sweep' forward and back to turn pages in either direction.)
TV nuggets (for UK readers)
TV Catchup - an awesome service that lets you stream the live broadcast of a number of terrestrial channels straight to your iPad. It's actually a web site, you'll have to register (just an email address required, no fees). To use it, go into Safari and browse to iphone.tvcatchup.com and you'll get the options of which channel to watch. I love to watch BBC News, and being able to stream that wherever I am over wifi is very liberating!
There's a handy feature in Safari that lets you make an App screen icon which is really a link straight to a bookmarked page. Just tap the '+' icon in the menu bar, and select 'Add to Home Screen'. It'll give you an icon that you can move to wherever is most useful for you!
BBC iPlayer - another great option for UK iPad users is that the BBC iPlayer has a bigscreen version in beta here. The quality of the video is great, but I have noticed the sound isn't always perfectly synced. (Not quite at the badly dubbed martial arts movie level though ;) )
Picture Frame nugget:
Go into Settings and you'll have the option of setting up your 'locked' screen to be a picture frame. That means while you leave your iPad on charge, you can tap on the little flower icon towards the bottom of the screen, and it will slideshow through the images in an album of your choice! Very nice :D
One final nugget for now:
On the iPad you can get 6 icons on the fixed menu bar, rather than the 4 on the iPhone / iPod Touch. Nice to have the extra space to fit in a couple more favourites!
It's always exciting when new devices or new versions of platforms are launched. There's the quiet storm of everyone working together to ensure games are compatible, sometimes in difficult circumstances - and with not a few unknowns! Then once the games are complete, there's the heightened anticipation as you wait to see what effect it has on sales. Sometimes it's several days or weeks before you can see an effect. With the iPad and Apple's daily reporting numbers, it was possible to get an indication almost immediately - ideal for a small company that can turn around quickly and make the most out of new information as it comes in!
We had chosen to release Astraware Solitaire, OddBlob and Astraware Sudoku as updates to our existing iPhone versions rather than completely brand new standalone apps, so we knew that existing owners would get to download the updates free so they could use them on both iPhone/iPod touch and their shiny new iPads. Because of this, we weren't sure how many new purchases to expect. We did think that iPad users were more likely to be attracted to some of our classic game packs, and we were rewarded by seeing an almost 10x increase in revenue on the iPad launch day itself. Sales have levelled off a little since the first day of release, but there's no doubt whatsoever that being in the store from the beginning has made a good improvement in sales of our updated games.
Now that we have an iPad in the office (yay!), we're making further updates to the games - adding iPod integration, support for OpenFeint for iPad, and even some new features, like our 'notepad' overlay in Astraware Sudoku. We're also working on updating Astraware Casino, so expect to see that soon too.
Great news for fans of PopCap Games Inc's classic action puzzler, Zuma - there's a brand new version of the game, completely rebuilt to support newer devices running Windows Mobile 5 and later, AND for the first time it's available for non-touchscreen Windows Mobile smartphones!
As the new version of the game has been completely rebuilt, saved games from the original version can't be transferred, but Zuma v1.50 supports a much wider range of devices and resolutions, and adds the popular Gauntlet mode found in the original PC game from PopCap! Best of all, registered users can download the new version for FREE! If you need a new registration email with the download link, just login to MyAstraware and request for the email to be re-sent!
For new users Zuma is priced at $9.99 and supports devices running Windows Mobile 5 and later!
Our CEO Howard Tomlinson has written a new article about extending our business to include iPad games. The article is mostly aimed at developers, but makes a great read for anyone interested in the business of games!
Here's a excerpt:
"The iPad launches in early April, with the first pre-orders expecting to land (gently I hope!) on doormats over the next week. Pretty much all iPhone developers have taken interest, and many have already confirmed iPad specific versions of their existing applications. At Astraware we've been gearing up to this since the announcement, and we should have a few titles ready to be in the store at launch, all being well. For us, the time to make iPad versions of existing games isn't that much extra, but it isn't always a no-brainer whether to extend to cover an extra part of a platform like this. I'm sure many developers who've seen disappointing sales of their iPhone apps have had to seriously question whether it's worth it to go for iPad too."
Check out the full article here and leave us your comments there too!

Why not head over and take a look?

"Overall, I would rate this game 10/10. If you enjoy playing solitaire games, then this game shall keep you entertained for hours!" - Allistair Lee, Mobile View

Astraware Solitaire includes 12 of the most well-known and best-loved single player card games. Some of the games require their own special strategies and tips, and so the forum for Astraware Solitaire is now up and running. If you're still searching for those elusive Golden Trophy cards, why not compare notes with your fellow players?!
Yes, we know... "lies, damned lies, and statistics"...
From the start of May we're changing our statistics just a little, and our top ten represents all of the products sold through the Astraware store, rather than the Astraware products that are sold through our store and all of our partner sites.
This might seem like something odd to do - but we realised that because not all of our products are sold at all of the resellers, it was getting strangely skewed, after all - if you're looking at the Astraware site, it is much better to see what is most popular from the selection right here. The new changes mean that the games that are the currently popular at the Astraware site are those which make it into the top of our charts.
Lots of our customers have been requesting more alternative ways to buy their games. Maybe we don't take the particular type of card you have, or you don't have a credit card at all. Lots of you requested that we accept PayPal® as an alternative to cards, and so, after a bit of nifty integration work from David, we're very pleased to say that PayPal® is now live on the Astraware website.
If you choose to pay with PayPal® instead of our usual checkout system you'll be redirected to the PayPal® site to put in your login details and confirm the transaction. Once that's done it will bring you straight back to the Astraware website to complete the transaction and we'll give you your registration code on screen there and then so you can start playing your game immediately. If you're familiar with using PayPal®, hopefully this will be just like you've used it at other sites!
Right now, its only possible to make purchases of Astraware developed and published products using PayPal®, so the option won't be available at the checkout if you've added one of the titles (from our Lifestyle catalog, for instance) that we resell for other companies.
As always, we're keen to receive your feedback, so do let us know if you use PayPal® to buy from us; how it compares to other PayPal® experiences you've had, what improvements we can make etc.
We're very pleased to announce updates to two of our most popular classic games. Dynomite!®, developed under license from PopCap Games® and Cubis®, developed under license from FreshGames®, have both received updates for Windows Mobile® Classic and Professional (Pocket PC and Phone Edition).
Both Cubis and Dynomite! have received a makeover with swish new menus, better support for one-handed navigation and improved compatibility on newer devices. Most importantly both games now include native 240x240 graphics to support devices like Palm®, Inc's Windows Mobile® Treos™ and HP®'s hw6500 and hw6900 iPAQs®.
Cubis is bundled with the Treo 700w and wx, whilst Dynomite! is bundled with the Treo 750, but now both games are generally available for everyone!
After 6 years of (mostly) faithful service, we've retired our old BlazeBoard and moved all of our users and posts over to a new forum powered by VBulletin. Not only does it look a bit snazzier (a bit of styling magic from David), it has a whole barrowload of features that make it much more of a pleasure to browse! Kieren and Paul K. have put in lots of effort to get it working nicely, and Howard is cross-eyed from all the PHP and MySQL to migrate everything.
If you're already an existing board user at Astraware (and you've posted recently!) you should have a username at the new forum, but you'll have to "request forgotten password" to get a new login. It's well worth it!
A major new feature is that we're using the forum to let people comment on our team blog entries - something we haven't had before. Update your links to check back to forums.astraware.com to see the new forums!
You may recall a blog post from a couple of months back that mentioned David and Larry had been working on some new technology systems to allow us to support other platforms. Well things have moved along, and we're now in the happy position to reveal a little more information!
One of the platforms that the new technology introduces is Mobile Linux, and whilst work is still in the early stages, we're very pleased to have been able to provide demos of a couple of games to ACCESS Co. Ltd. for them to show with their ACCESS Linux Platform at the 3GSM World Congress.
We're expecting that Mobile Linux in its various forms will become a popular platform choice amongst a range of mobile phone manufacturers in the future, and we look forward to being able to bring a wide range of best-selling Astraware games to those new devices as they appear.
These are exciting times! Watch this space...

Great news for players of Broken Sword Shadow of the Templars for Palm OS®. If you've ever got stuck because of visiting places in a particular order (Spain before Syria!), you'll be pleased to know this has now been fixed in an update - version 1.10 is now available for download.
Existing saved games aren't compatible with this update, so you'll lose your progress. If you've already got past both Syria and Spain, you won't need to install the new version, but if you are stuck you will need to delete all existing game files before installing the new version. We hope you'll enjoy playing through some of the earlier parts again - perhaps you might try out some of the other options and see what happens!
Existing customers who have requested updates have been sent new download links. If you haven't received an email, please contact our Support Team.

Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine have just announced the winners of their 2006 Best Software Awards, and we're very excited that we've won two of their prestigious 'gongs'. Bejeweled 2 has been selected by the panel of judges as the winner in the Games: Color Matching category, with Zuma listed as the runner-up. Astraware Sudoku beat off fierce competition to win in the Sudoku Puzzles category. Chuzzle, Cubis and Insaniquarium were also finalists in the awards.
"When we started our Sudoku project we spent a lot of time playing on paper and working out what would work best for real Sudoku players, before looking just at features," said Howard Tomlinson, CEO of Astraware. "The Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine Best Software Award for Astraware Sudoku as the Best Sudoku is a gratifying recognition that we got it right!
"I'll admit that Astraware Sudoku isn't the most glitzy looking Sudoku around, but I think the panel were looking beyond the glitz. Having a clear and easy interface, helpful hints, and of course the connected features are probably what matters most. Celebrations and cheers all round from the Astraware Team!"
The new feature starting today is that we're splitting out our news and announcements from our more random commentary - making a place for us to put all of the kinds of things that we might not mention in the What's New section! As well as more info on a wider range of subjects, you'll be able to see which of us is making each of the new comments, and get to know some of the Astraware team a bit better!
First up is our take on the new Treo 680 announcement, and the most important question of all... which colour to choose? Find out what the team decided on our blog!
Astraware's own cake maniac, Katherine Gordon, has created a very special patisserie masterpiece in celebration of the release of Cake Mania for Palm OS®. Kat, who usually splits her time between working on the Astraware website and creating games, is well known in the Astraware office for her baking skills. This is the first time where real life is imitating the game!
For those of you who are interested in the details of Kat's Cake Mania celebration: the cake consists of a bottom sponge layer with chocolate frosting, a top sponge layer with strawberry frosting, and the Super Slyder decoration is made entirely of marzipan!
The crew of the good ship Astraware love to dress up, talk daft, and act like complete idiots at pretty much any time, so International Talk Like a Pirate Day is the perfect opportunity to have even more fun, and to raise some money for charity too!
The fine folks at Marie Curie Cancer Care are celebratin' too, so we're donatin' the proceeds of sales from our best piratey games, Tradewinds and Seven Seas to them!
We always take plenty of pics on our fun days - you can see some more here!
We've also discovered that answering the phone with a loud "Ahoy there matey!" is exceptionally good at getting rid of cold-callers - we're happy to share that bit o' knowledge!
Have you ever wondered how a game gets made? Why we develop a particular idea, and what things are taken into consideration when creating game, then we have an insight for you. To mark the release of StarPop™, Howard has written a full-length feature that takes the game from the germ of an idea, to the final release of a game. It gives a detailed view of the design and creative process, the criteria that a game must fill to reach the Astraware standard, and offers a little insight into the work behind the scenes that goes into games.
David and Howard were lucky enough to be invited to attend the London simulcast of the Apple Special Event that happened in San Francisco.
Howard : "There were plenty of exciting announcements - new iPods, their new movie service, and even a sneak preview of their upcoming TV device, but it was their games announcement we were most excited to see!"
David : "It was awesome to see Steve Jobs demoing them on the big screen, especially as Astraware had worked with Apple and PopCap in the development of both Bejeweled and Zuma for the 5th generation iPods! Figuring out how to make things work with a very different interface was a challenge, but it's thrilling to see the final products up on screen and out there on iTunes."Howard : "It was also great to get home and finally try them out on my own iPod! As if I don't already have enough to occupy my time..."
Do you and your family members play PDA games? If you do, we'd like you to help us with a new game coming out very soon. Created with fun and families in mind, we're hoping it is simple and absorbing and... well, you'll see!
We're looking for just a few people with families willing to help out and give some feedback. Our preference is to include people who have children who can be trusted with a valuable PDA to play a game for a while. There's no minimum or maximum age, indeed we'll be happy if everyone in the family gets to have a go.
If you'd be willing to help, please visit the sign up page here.
Congratulations are in order to David and his lovely new wife Neroli on their marriage on Saturday! It has taken him years to organise (David is reknowned for being a very careful planner) - but it certainly was a great event with lots of the Astraware team in attendance too.
We wish them the very best of luck, and a happy honeymoon as they go on a long tour of America.
They are, from left to right, Paul (QA), Ben (Game Development), Stephen (Game Development), Katherine (Web and Game Development) and Mike (Game Art).
"We needed to scale up our capacity to create games to take advantage of more opportunities," said Howard, our CEO. "Increasing requests to create games for handhelds - particularly Windows Mobile - coming in from many of the casual games companies we work with, along with our desire to create more of our own games, means we need more good staff!"
They've joined us right in the middle of the hottest time of the year in our packed (and non air-conditioned) office, but are cheerful and enthusiastic and already joining in with some of the end-of-week chaos fun that happens at Astraware on Fridays!
In honor of the late great Douglas Adams, the hoopy froods at Astraware are celebrating Towel Day on 25th May. A hoopy frood was described by Adams in The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy as someone 'who really knows where their towel is'!
All across the world today, people are proudly displaying their towels. Zaphod Tomlinson, CEO of Astraware had this to say on the subject: "Douglas Adams changed our lives - great writing that makes you look at the world from a whole new standpoint, maybe even two standpoints at once, which is cool but gives you a double headache."
For more information on Towel Day:
We'd like to introduce you to the newest member of the Astraware family - Abigail Margaret! Born on 15th March and weighing 6lb 9oz, she's already visited the Astraware offices with her mom - Astraware Accounts Manager, Ruth Pittwood - and showed all the signs of being at home here in the office. We're sure the soothing sound of humming computers will have been familiar.
Please join us in congratulating Ruth and her husband Glen on their new arrival!
Always wanted to work at a fun company? Think you've got what it takes?
Because of some really cool stuff going on here at Astraware, we're looking to increase the size of our development and QA teams - and we have some upcoming vacancies for

Wall Street Journal.
Howard Tomlinson, our CEO (and Sudoku master), was interviewed for the feature regarding Astraware Sudoku.
Here's what the Wall Street Journal had to say: "Companies say they are seeing strong interest in their mobile sudoku games. Howard Tomlinson, chief executive of mobile-game maker Astraware Ltd. estimates that there are dozens of different versions of mobile sudoku -- roughly 20 or so for Palm and Windows Mobile devices alone. Astraware's sudoku game, which costs $19.95 for billions of puzzles, is currently the eighth most popular of some 20,000 software downloads that are available for Palm devices."To read the whole feature, visit the Wall Street Journal. To get your copy of Astraware Sudoku, click here.
When we created Astraware Sudoku we wanted to create a version that allowed you to play how you want. It contains options to create puzzles using the puzzle generator, enter and solve puzzles found in newspapers or magazines, download the Sudoku of the Day using a network connection, or to solve puzzles provided in pre-built packs - as well as lots of different ways to play with or without assistance.
Since its launch last September, Astraware Sudoku has been incredibly popular and from emails we're starting to receive from fans, it seems that some of you may now have exhausted the pre-built puzzle packs on sudokuoftheday.com - and you are obviously really addicted to this game!
Don't worry, here's good news, there are now 5 new pre-built puzzle packs for EACH difficulty level available (Beginner, Easy, Medium, Tricky, Fiendish and Diabolical). Each pack contains 100 puzzles, and they are downloadable FREE from our Sudoku of the Day site.

Initiate your training with the onboard 'Flight School' tutorial and then you're ready to face the enemy. Good luck Moonfighter!

We're here ready for doors opening at CES, the largest trade show for consumer electronics in the US, and incredibly excited to be helping with the official launch of the Treo 700w - the new Windows Mobile device from Palm!
Along with the launch we're showing off Cubis - bundled with the 700w - and we're already getting pounded with questions and requests for photos - and copies of the games of course!
Being here for a product launch and being involved is a great deal of fun - and it is certainly a novel experience being on a booth with both Palm and Microsoft! Interesting times!
If you're at CES - stop by and say "Hi!" and try out the new games and devices while you're here!

Alison and Richard Barclay join us today and are both gadget and game freaks - so coming to work for Astraware is like giving children the keys to a sweet shop!

Alison joins as the new PR & Marketing Co-ordinator with Astraware, continuing to enthuse madly about our games, and helping to promote our products worldwide.
Richard joins Astraware as Web Developer, straight from a role as Technical Producer at Comic Relief, but has previously worked at Zomba Records producing websites and related technology for artists such as Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. We've promised to not hold that against him, however.
Now we just have to find them spaces in our already "friendly" (i.e. cramped) office!

Spring is always a good time for making changes, and this year, we've decided to perform the long-overdue update to our website! We now have an all-new look to our website, with a more modern styling, and most importantly a much simpler way to navigate around the different game types and various platforms we support!
The new design isn't just superficial either, we have a much slicker engine that means our site can hold more content, yet deliver it more quickly, and it is now linked together in a way that makes it easier for us to add new products for other people, so you can expect shortly for us to start hosting some top titles from other developers!
Of course, we want everyone to come and marvel at the site, and what better way than offering some special discounts. April Fool's day only lasts for one day, but we've decided to extend our April Foolishness for a whole two weeks, during which there are special discounts across pretty much all of our PDA games!
We'd love to hear your feedback on the new website - let us know what you like or dislike about the new site, and if (gasp!) you happen to spot an error, we'd really appreciate it if you can let us know! Our web feedback page makes getting in touch extra easy, and is at Our Contact Page

The earliest Palm handhelds could do little more than make beeps - but as hardware manufacturers added new features, Astraware has always kept step! (Zap!2000 was the first ever wave enhanced game for Palm OS, when it was launched with the BeatPlus Handspring Module).
The latest PDA hardware allows much more capability, and we're right there supporting it. (We know how precious storage memory is!) What's more, we're able to do cool things such as dynamic mixing of sound effects, and that means we can finally give what so many have been asking us for - Music!
In celebration of our new technology, and winning the Handango Game Of The Year award for Bejeweled, we've just released an all-new singing version of Bejeweled that includes the same fabulous music that accompanies the desktop version. Its hard to imagine, but we think it somehow manages to make Bejeweled even better! We're already finding our timed-mode scores increasing as our pulses race with the music - perhaps you will too!
