Visit our Touchpad Totalizer page, see what games are coming next, and help us spread the word amongst the awesome webOS community so we can bring these other games to you. We're almost a quarter of the way towards the next title already, but we can't do it without your help!

2nd December 2011: Saying goodbye to some older products and platforms.

The world of mobile applications and devices is a fast moving place. Devices and operating systems are updated often, and their popularity changes over time. Eventually the time comes when some of them need to ride off into the sunset. With this in mind, we have taken the decision to discontinue sales of games for Palm OS, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, and Symbian S60 from our website.

Palm OS, and Windows Mobile have both been retired by their respective creators and so a couple of years down the line, we feel the time is right for us to do the same. You can however still get our webOS games for the Palm Pre.

For BlackBerry and Symbian S60, while we kept up for some time with new devices and OS versions, we found that there wasn't enough demand for our titles on these platforms to keep up the pace of development for each new device and OS version. As our games began to support only a minority of devices available, we took the decision again that it's better to retire the products and focus on making the best games we can for platforms which are popular now, and we believe have the brightest future.

We will provide support for purchases for these platforms for a limited period of time, but if you have bought these games and may need to reset your device or re-download the games, we'd recommend doing that now and keeping the files (and codes where relevant) backed up in a safe place. If you have any questions, please direct these to our Support Team: here.

18th November 2010: Astraware Mahjong - 10 Years On!

The old and new faces of Astraware MahjongReleasing Astraware Mahjong for iPhone and iPad marks a wonderful warm glowy point for us - Mahjong was the first real game that Astraware developed after moving from a partnership (a hobby with benefits) to a company (same again, with extra bonus paperwork!).

We worked really hard on the game for Palm OS, despite what (compared to now) would be a very constrained platform, and came out with a great playable game that amazingly continued to sell for as long as Palm OS was alive - and then even longer! It never got the exposure or hit status of many of our other games, but the thing was, people kept on buying it and playing it!

Some of the early design features, such as making sure the game was fun, the tiles were really visible, and that the puzzles generated were all actually solvable, are all principles we kept when designing the new version. This last one was a real headscratcher, and I remember it requiring a whole lot of really strong coffee to help solve that!

The new version has been a long time coming - we've had it planned for at least 5 years as a game to come back and create for new platforms, and this one has been in development (on and off) for nearly a year, during which we've done a whole lot of work to get a really nice game that uses 3D technology in a good way. We've also added some features we're really proud of, like achievements and a golden tile deck to earn and play with (an idea borrowed from Astraware Solitaire) and also the competitive 'Mahjong Of The Day' feature - cheerfully inherited from Astraware Sudoku's daily puzzles and high score tables.

We're busily working to bring Astraware Mahjong to other platforms as soon as possible, including a very new giant leap for Astraware, which is making desktop Mac and PC versions! Who knows where that will lead us!

Of course the complete full circle would be to come back and revisit the first game that launched Astraware - Zap!2000. But that would be teasing, wouldn't it!

24th June 2010: My new iPhone 4 by Alison Barclay

My new iPhone4 in its boxHaving been lucky enough to witness the announcement of iPhone 4 in person at this year's Apple Worldwide Developer Conference, I was keen to get my hands on one as soon as possible after release. This morning, at an hour much earlier than I usually awake, I dragged myself out of bed and got ready to head down to our local O2 store. O2 had opted not to offer any kind of pre-order, but had specified that they would only sell the iPhone to existing O2 subscribers. As I was out of contract with them, I decided to queue up nice and early and take my chances.

I arrived at the O2 store just after 6.00 am to find myself 9th in the queue. There was some debate about how many iPhones the store would have in stock and we chatted generally until the store manager arrived and started to take information from people in the queue. Just before the opening time of 8.02 am, the manager got to me, took my details and gave me a voucher for the phone. I was in! Now I just had to fill out some paperwork and before long I was walking out with a lovely new boxed 32GB iPhone4!

The new iPhone 4 in its boxI headed back to the office and with keen onlookers opened the box to reveal the new iPhone. I unpacked it to reveal the earbuds, USB sync cable, and a very neat little wall plug for charging your phone. Inside the documentation pack there was a tiny tool for opening the SIM card tray, and I put this to good work, removing the SIM from my old iPhone, extracting the micro SIM section and inserting it into the iPhone 4. Once that was done it was time to plug the phone into iTunes to activate it. The activation took a matter of seconds and soon I was looking at the shiny new default home screen complete with background wallpaper - a new feature that was added in iOS4!

The default home screen with Apple appsThe first thing that strikes you is just how incredibly clear the screen is. The type is beautifully defined, and the default wallpaper really shows off the screen well. There's also a new 'glassy' dock at the bottom where you can keep your 4 favourite/most-used apps! Once I was done admiring the screen, it was time to sync my phone with the backup from my old iPhone. It took a while to optimize all my photos for iPhone 4, add several GB of music and install updated versions of some applications I'd downloaded, and whilst it was copying everything across I took a photo close up of the syncing screen so you could see how smooth the fonts are.

The iPhone 4's Retina screen shows no pixellationEven at close range the micro mode on my camera didn't show the screen as pixellated. The type is very easy to read and the claim that your eye cannot discern the pixels at 300+ pixels per inch certainly rings true here! Once syncing was complete I launched iBooks and opened up Winnie The Pooh (a childhood favourite). The quality of the typeface and the original illustration is amazing - very sharp, easy on the eye, and reminiscent of a real book. Even very small type is clear and crisp. I also ran a small test outdoors and the screen is also easy to read in bright sunlight (unusually we actually have bright sunlight in the UK today, so I could test it!)

The standard non-optimised version of OddBlob on iPhone 4As a final test of my new phone I decided to check out a few applications on iPhone 4. I'd had an update from Twitter yesterday to say it was updated, so I launched the app and sure enough the graphics and typeface were all very high quality. I tried double-clicking iPhone 4's Home button and it popped up the multitasking bar at the bottom of the screen, so I was able to switch to another app and then go back to Twitter finding it in exactly the same place I'd left it! We're in the process of adding this functionality to as many of our games as possible, so look out for updates soon!

We haven't updated any of the graphics in our games to optimize them for iPhone 4's 640x960 resolution Retina screen, but in the meantime, the phone will automatically resize the existing graphics using Apple's pixel-doubling technology. I must say that even without optimization, OddBlob looks really amazing. Can't wait to see what the updated graphics look like! If you've got your hands on a shiny new iPhone 4, why not visit our Facebook page and give us your impressions and feedback!

3rd June 2010: iPad Nuggets by Howard Tomlinson

Howard with his iPadHoward recently took delivery of an iPad here are a few hints and tips he's found in the first week of use:

Reading nuggets:

iBooks is great - but you're not just limited to books from the Apple store - ePub format works fine, and there are plenty of places to find free eBooks (Project Gutenberg being the #1 stop!). Set the font size to the size most comfortable to you and read away.

There's a setting (hidden away in the Settings app) that allows you to change the behaviour of a single tap on the left side of the screen, so you can make that also advance a page. Might not sound like much of a change but if you're reading in bed it gives you the choice of which hand to advance the pages with, and with minimal effort :D (You can still 'sweep' forward and back to turn pages in either direction.)

TV nuggets (for UK readers)

TV Catchup - an awesome service that lets you stream the live broadcast of a number of terrestrial channels straight to your iPad. It's actually a web site, you'll have to register (just an email address required, no fees). To use it, go into Safari and browse to iphone.tvcatchup.com and you'll get the options of which channel to watch. I love to watch BBC News, and being able to stream that wherever I am over wifi is very liberating!

There's a handy feature in Safari that lets you make an App screen icon which is really a link straight to a bookmarked page. Just tap the '+' icon in the menu bar, and select 'Add to Home Screen'. It'll give you an icon that you can move to wherever is most useful for you!

BBC iPlayer - another great option for UK iPad users is that the BBC iPlayer has a bigscreen version in beta here. The quality of the video is great, but I have noticed the sound isn't always perfectly synced. (Not quite at the badly dubbed martial arts movie level though ;) )

Picture Frame nugget:

Go into Settings and you'll have the option of setting up your 'locked' screen to be a picture frame. That means while you leave your iPad on charge, you can tap on the little flower icon towards the bottom of the screen, and it will slideshow through the images in an album of your choice! Very nice :D

One final nugget for now:

On the iPad you can get 6 icons on the fixed menu bar, rather than the 4 on the iPhone / iPod Touch. Nice to have the extra space to fit in a couple more favourites!

13th April 2010: Our first week on the iPad

Astraware Solitaire, OddBlob and Astraware Sudoku for iPadIt's always exciting when new devices or new versions of platforms are launched. There's the quiet storm of everyone working together to ensure games are compatible, sometimes in difficult circumstances - and with not a few unknowns! Then once the games are complete, there's the heightened anticipation as you wait to see what effect it has on sales. Sometimes it's several days or weeks before you can see an effect. With the iPad and Apple's daily reporting numbers, it was possible to get an indication almost immediately - ideal for a small company that can turn around quickly and make the most out of new information as it comes in!

We had chosen to release Astraware Solitaire, OddBlob and Astraware Sudoku as updates to our existing iPhone versions rather than completely brand new standalone apps, so we knew that existing owners would get to download the updates free so they could use them on both iPhone/iPod touch and their shiny new iPads. Because of this, we weren't sure how many new purchases to expect. We did think that iPad users were more likely to be attracted to some of our classic game packs, and we were rewarded by seeing an almost 10x increase in revenue on the iPad launch day itself. Sales have levelled off a little since the first day of release, but there's no doubt whatsoever that being in the store from the beginning has made a good improvement in sales of our updated games.

Now that we have an iPad in the office (yay!), we're making further updates to the games - adding iPod integration, support for OpenFeint for iPad, and even some new features, like our 'notepad' overlay in Astraware Sudoku. We're also working on updating Astraware Casino, so expect to see that soon too.

6th April 2010: New version of Zuma for Windows Mobile!

Zuma for Windows Mobile phonesGreat news for fans of PopCap Games Inc's classic action puzzler, Zuma - there's a brand new version of the game, completely rebuilt to support newer devices running Windows Mobile 5 and later, AND for the first time it's available for non-touchscreen Windows Mobile smartphones!

As the new version of the game has been completely rebuilt, saved games from the original version can't be transferred, but Zuma v1.50 supports a much wider range of devices and resolutions, and adds the popular Gauntlet mode found in the original PC game from PopCap! Best of all, registered users can download the new version for FREE! If you need a new registration email with the download link, just login to MyAstraware and request for the email to be re-sent!

For new users Zuma is priced at $9.99 and supports devices running Windows Mobile 5 and later!

31st March 2010: Extending to iPad - business and development thoughts from Howard

Our CEO Howard Tomlinson has written a new article about extending our business to include iPad games. The article is mostly aimed at developers, but makes a great read for anyone interested in the business of games!

Here's a excerpt:

"The iPad launches in early April, with the first pre-orders expecting to land (gently I hope!) on doormats over the next week. Pretty much all iPhone developers have taken interest, and many have already confirmed iPad specific versions of their existing applications. At Astraware we've been gearing up to this since the announcement, and we should have a few titles ready to be in the store at launch, all being well. For us, the time to make iPad versions of existing games isn't that much extra, but it isn't always a no-brainer whether to extend to cover an extra part of a platform like this. I'm sure many developers who've seen disappointing sales of their iPhone apps have had to seriously question whether it's worth it to go for iPad too."

Check out the full article here and leave us your comments there too!

You might also have noticed that our basket is now running on Handmark.com (our parent company), so any checkouts you make (except iPhone) will go to Handmark.com and this means you'll purchase using Handmark's superior browsing and checkout system which includes Shop By Device, so you'll only see the games that are compatible with your phone. You also have the option of SMS message delivery so you can download your purchase direct from an SMS link and additional payment options including direct operator billing.

If you have any feedback or questions on our new look site or the purchasing process, don't hesitate to get in touch!

30th April 2007: New statistics

Astraware's Top 10Yes, we know... "lies, damned lies, and statistics"...

From the start of May we're changing our statistics just a little, and our top ten represents all of the products sold through the Astraware store, rather than the Astraware products that are sold through our store and all of our partner sites.

This might seem like something odd to do - but we realised that because not all of our products are sold at all of the resellers, it was getting strangely skewed, after all - if you're looking at the Astraware site, it is much better to see what is most popular from the selection right here. The new changes mean that the games that are the currently popular at the Astraware site are those which make it into the top of our charts.

11th April 2007: Astraware now accepts PayPal®

Astraware now accepting PayPalLots of our customers have been requesting more alternative ways to buy their games. Maybe we don't take the particular type of card you have, or you don't have a credit card at all. Lots of you requested that we accept PayPal® as an alternative to cards, and so, after a bit of nifty integration work from David, we're very pleased to say that PayPal® is now live on the Astraware website.

If you choose to pay with PayPal® instead of our usual checkout system you'll be redirected to the PayPal® site to put in your login details and confirm the transaction. Once that's done it will bring you straight back to the Astraware website to complete the transaction and we'll give you your registration code on screen there and then so you can start playing your game immediately. If you're familiar with using PayPal®, hopefully this will be just like you've used it at other sites!

Right now, its only possible to make purchases of Astraware developed and published products using PayPal®, so the option won't be available at the checkout if you've added one of the titles (from our Lifestyle catalog, for instance) that we resell for other companies.

As always, we're keen to receive your feedback, so do let us know if you use PayPal® to buy from us; how it compares to other PayPal® experiences you've had, what improvements we can make etc.

26th March 2007: Cubis and Dynomite! both updated with 240x240 support!

After 6 years of (mostly) faithful service, we've retired our old BlazeBoard and moved all of our users and posts over to a new forum powered by VBulletin. Not only does it look a bit snazzier (a bit of styling magic from David), it has a whole barrowload of features that make it much more of a pleasure to browse! Kieren and Paul K. have put in lots of effort to get it working nicely, and Howard is cross-eyed from all the PHP and MySQL to migrate everything.

If you're already an existing board user at Astraware (and you've posted recently!) you should have a username at the new forum, but you'll have to "request forgotten password" to get a new login. It's well worth it!

A major new feature is that we're using the forum to let people comment on our team blog entries - something we haven't had before. Update your links to check back to forums.astraware.com to see the new forums!

13th February 2007: Mobile Linux: ACCESS is demoing our games at 3GSM!

Bejeweled running on a prototype phone board You may recall a blog post from a couple of months back that mentioned David and Larry had been working on some new technology systems to allow us to support other platforms. Well things have moved along, and we're now in the happy position to reveal a little more information!

One of the platforms that the new technology introduces is Mobile Linux, and whilst work is still in the early stages, we're very pleased to have been able to provide demos of a couple of games to ACCESS Co. Ltd. for them to show with their ACCESS Linux Platform at the 3GSM World Congress.

We're expecting that Mobile Linux in its various forms will become a popular platform choice amongst a range of mobile phone manufacturers in the future, and we look forward to being able to bring a wide range of best-selling Astraware games to those new devices as they appear.

These are exciting times! Watch this space...

Palm Addict said: "If I had to give this game a score it would win 10/10, I would say it's Astraware's best game yet."

The Gadgeteer said: "...this is a gorgeous puzzle game that will totally keep your mind occupied. It looks great on my Treo 750v, even in 240x240 resolution."

28th November 2006: Broken Sword Shadow of the Templars for Palm OS® updated.

Broken Sword Shadow of the Templars

Great news for players of Broken Sword Shadow of the Templars for Palm OS®. If you've ever got stuck because of visiting places in a particular order (Spain before Syria!), you'll be pleased to know this has now been fixed in an update - version 1.10 is now available for download.

Existing saved games aren't compatible with this update, so you'll lose your progress. If you've already got past both Syria and Spain, you won't need to install the new version, but if you are stuck you will need to delete all existing game files before installing the new version. We hope you'll enjoy playing through some of the earlier parts again - perhaps you might try out some of the other options and see what happens!

18th October 2006: Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine awards for Astraware Sudoku and Bejeweled 2

Astraware Sudoku

Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine have just announced the winners of their 2006 Best Software Awards, and we're very excited that we've won two of their prestigious 'gongs'. Bejeweled 2 has been selected by the panel of judges as the winner in the Games: Color Matching category, with Zuma listed as the runner-up. Astraware Sudoku beat off fierce competition to win in the Sudoku Puzzles category. Chuzzle, Cubis and Insaniquarium were also finalists in the awards.

"When we started our Sudoku project we spent a lot of time playing on paper and working out what would work best for real Sudoku players, before looking just at features," said Howard Tomlinson, CEO of Astraware. "The Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine Best Software Award for Astraware Sudoku as the Best Sudoku is a gratifying recognition that we got it right!

"I'll admit that Astraware Sudoku isn't the most glitzy looking Sudoku around, but I think the panel were looking beyond the glitz. Having a clear and easy interface, helpful hints, and of course the connected features are probably what matters most. Celebrations and cheers all round from the Astraware Team!"

13th October 2006: Announcing Astraware Blog

The new feature starting today is that we're splitting out our news and announcements from our more random commentary - making a place for us to put all of the kinds of things that we might not mention in the What's New section! As well as more info on a wider range of subjects, you'll be able to see which of us is making each of the new comments, and get to know some of the Astraware team a bit better!

First up is our take on the new Treo 680 announcement, and the most important question of all... which colour to choose? Find out what the team decided on our blog!

11th October 2006: Just call me Jill...

Katherine Gordon & Cake Mania cake

Astraware's own cake maniac, Katherine Gordon, has created a very special patisserie masterpiece in celebration of the release of Cake Mania for Palm OS®. Kat, who usually splits her time between working on the Astraware website and creating games, is well known in the Astraware office for her baking skills. This is the first time where real life is imitating the game!

For those of you who are interested in the details of Kat's Cake Mania celebration: the cake consists of a bottom sponge layer with chocolate frosting, a top sponge layer with strawberry frosting, and the Super Slyder decoration is made entirely of marzipan!

19th September 2006: Arrrrr! We've been gettin' nautical!

Talk Like a Pirate Day

The crew of the good ship Astraware love to dress up, talk daft, and act like complete idiots at pretty much any time, so International Talk Like a Pirate Day is the perfect opportunity to have even more fun, and to raise some money for charity too!

The fine folks at Marie Curie Cancer Care are celebratin' too, so we're donatin' the proceeds of sales from our best piratey games, Tradewinds and Seven Seas to them!

We always take plenty of pics on our fun days - you can see some more here!

We've also discovered that answering the phone with a loud "Ahoy there matey!" is exceptionally good at getting rid of cold-callers - we're happy to share that bit o' knowledge!

13th September 2006: The StarPop Story

Howard with StarPop

Have you ever wondered how a game gets made? Why we develop a particular idea, and what things are taken into consideration when creating game, then we have an insight for you. To mark the release of StarPop™, Howard has written a full-length feature that takes the game from the germ of an idea, to the final release of a game. It gives a detailed view of the design and creative process, the criteria that a game must fill to reach the Astraware standard, and offers a little insight into the work behind the scenes that goes into games.

Jump over to StarPopGame.com to read the feature now! Oh, and make sure you pick up your copy of the game too so you can try it out!

13th September 2006: Apple Event - Seeing Bejeweled on an iPod!

Bejeweled on an iPod

David and Howard were lucky enough to be invited to attend the London simulcast of the Apple Special Event that happened in San Francisco.

Howard : "There were plenty of exciting announcements - new iPods, their new movie service, and even a sneak preview of their upcoming TV device, but it was their games announcement we were most excited to see!"

David : "It was awesome to see Steve Jobs demoing them on the big screen, especially as Astraware had worked with Apple and PopCap in the development of both Bejeweled and Zuma for the 5th generation iPods! Figuring out how to make things work with a very different interface was a challenge, but it's thrilling to see the final products up on screen and out there on iTunes."

Howard : "It was also great to get home and finally try them out on my own iPod! As if I don't already have enough to occupy my time..."

14th August 2006: Got a family? Get in touch!

Astraware Needs You

We're looking for just a few people with families willing to help out and give some feedback. Our preference is to include people who have children who can be trusted with a valuable PDA to play a game for a while. There's no minimum or maximum age, indeed we'll be happy if everyone in the family gets to have a go.

If you'd be willing to help, please visit the sign up page here.

1st August 2006: It's an Astrawedding!

Mr & Mrs Oakley

Congratulations are in order to David and his lovely new wife Neroli on their marriage on Saturday! It has taken him years to organise (David is reknowned for being a very careful planner) - but it certainly was a great event with lots of the Astraware team in attendance too.

We wish them the very best of luck, and a happy honeymoon as they go on a long tour of America.

16th June 2006: Astraware welcomes new staff!

L-R: Paul, Ben, Stephen, Katherine, and MikeAstraware wishes a warm welcome to its new team members who have just joined!

They are, from left to right, Paul (QA), Ben (Game Development), Stephen (Game Development), Katherine (Web and Game Development) and Mike (Game Art).

"We needed to scale up our capacity to create games to take advantage of more opportunities," said Howard, our CEO. "Increasing requests to create games for handhelds - particularly Windows Mobile - coming in from many of the casual games companies we work with, along with our desire to create more of our own games, means we need more good staff!"

They've joined us right in the middle of the hottest time of the year in our packed (and non air-conditioned) office, but are cheerful and enthusiastic and already joining in with some of the end-of-week chaos fun that happens at Astraware on Fridays!

25th May 2006: Astraware celebrates Towel Day!

Towel Day

In honor of the late great Douglas Adams, the hoopy froods at Astraware are celebrating Towel Day on 25th May. A hoopy frood was described by Adams in The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy as someone 'who really knows where their towel is'!

All across the world today, people are proudly displaying their towels. Zaphod Tomlinson, CEO of Astraware had this to say on the subject: "Douglas Adams changed our lives - great writing that makes you look at the world from a whole new standpoint, maybe even two standpoints at once, which is cool but gives you a double headache."

For more information on Towel Day:

20th April 2006: It's a girl!

We'd like to introduce you to the newest member of the Astraware family - Abigail Margaret! Howard Tomlinson, our CEO (and Sudoku master), was interviewed for the feature regarding Astraware Sudoku.

Here's what the Wall Street Journal had to say: "Companies say they are seeing strong interest in their mobile sudoku games. Howard Tomlinson, chief executive of mobile-game maker Astraware Ltd. estimates that there are dozens of different versions of mobile sudoku -- roughly 20 or so for Palm and Windows Mobile devices alone. Astraware's sudoku game, which costs $19.95 for billions of puzzles, is currently the eighth most popular of some 20,000 software downloads that are available for Palm devices."

We were included and rated for features including our expansion, employment of local staff and use of local services, as well as our contribution to the local economy in terms of business and exports.

Pictured are David and Howard, who are rarely seen in such formal wear! (Click the pic to see Graham and John who attended too!)

1st April 2004: April Foolishness for our new-look site!

Spring is always a good time for making changes, and this year, we've decided to perform the long-overdue update to our website! We now have an all-new look to our website, with a more modern styling, and most importantly a much simpler way to navigate around the different game types and various platforms we support!

The new design isn't just superficial either, we have a much slicker engine that means our site can hold more content, yet deliver it more quickly, and it is now linked together in a way that makes it easier for us to add new products for other people, so you can expect shortly for us to start hosting some top titles from other developers!

Of course, we want everyone to come and marvel at the site, and what better way than offering some special discounts. April Fool's day only lasts for one day, but we've decided to extend our April Foolishness for a whole two weeks, during which there are special discounts across pretty much all of our PDA games!

We'd love to hear your feedback on the new website - let us know what you like or dislike about the new site, and if (gasp!) you happen to spot an error, we'd really appreciate it if you can let us know! Our web feedback page makes getting in touch extra easy, and is at Our Contact Page

With a choice of "Be My Valentine" or "Will You Marry Me", and appropriate effects to accompany each, this is a very different way of communicating with your lover!

There's an extra bonus too - any couples who get engaged as a result of Bejeweled Valentine's Edition will be eligible for some special presents from Astraware, PopCap, and Handango!

We're pleased to announce our latest technology that is making itself heard in all of our latest games and updates - the Aurora Sound System!

The earliest Palm handhelds could do little more than make beeps - but as hardware manufacturers added new features, Astraware has always kept step! (Zap!2000 was the first ever wave enhanced game for Palm OS, when it was launched with the BeatPlus Handspring Module).

The latest PDA hardware allows much more capability, and we're right there supporting it. Its hard to imagine, but we think it somehow manages to make Bejeweled even better! We're already finding our timed-mode scores increasing as our pulses race with the music - perhaps you will too!
