I have a Sony CLIÉ but I'm not getting any sound effects!

There are a few possible causes for this, depending on which model of Sony CLIÉ you have.

For music and sound effect support, a CLIÉ can broadly be considered in to be in one of three categories:

  1. Palm OS 4.x and older devices
  2. Palm OS 5.0 devices without "Yamaha" or Palm OS 5 audio processing capability.
  3. Palm OS 5.0 devices with a "Yamaha" sound processor
  4. Palm OS 5.0 devices with the standard Palm OS 5 audio processing capability

Category 1
This is possibly the easiest to identify, as it includes any CLIÉ that uses Palm OS 4.1 or lower. Examples include the SJ33, T615, T665, NR60 and NR70V

Category 2
Comprises of 2 devices, the TJ25 and the TJ27. These devices do not have the required hardware to handle sample sounds or in game music.

Category 3
This is quite a small group of devices, comprising the following:
  • NX series CLIÉs (NX60, NX70V, NX73V, NX80V)
  • NZ series CLIÉs (NZ90)
  • TG series CLIÉs (TG50)

Category 4
Category 4 includes any device not mentioned already. Examples include the TJ35, TJ37, UX series CLIÉs and the TH55.

CLIÉs in the first and third categories utilise a different format for enhanced sound playback to that used by the majority of common Palm OS handhelds. As a result, they are not compatible with music in our games at all, and may not play sound effects in some games.

There exists an application for the third category of devices which allows them to play sound in the same way as the newer Sony CLIÉs do, albeit requiring a fair amount of processing power (which causes slower performance and occasional "stuttering"). This application is called the MCA2 audio hack, and can be found here:

The MCA2 hack is not supported by Astraware in any way, and as the website cautions, it is very much a "use at your own risk" application. The link and details on the MCA2 hack are provided for informational purposes only.

Any CLIÉ in the fourth category is fully compatible with both music and sound effects in our games, and so users should get both music and sound effects!
